Ohm

Resistance. Loss. Action. Tranquility. A lonely struggle. Pulsating and continuously repeating - without end. Moving becomes a compulsive battle to retain control. Offering resistance to the superficial and the perishable. Bodies resisting, bodies surrendering.

The subject matter is very special to Ann Van den Broek and her interpretation in Ohm makes control and resistance palpable – in combination with its compelling rhythms and determined performers. A similar tension is often expressed indirectly in Ann Van den Broek’s work via other themes. In Ohm she focuses on the idea of resistance and strips the piece of incidental emotions in order to get to the essence of it. The urgent style hangs on to the resistance and makes it tangible in the here and now. Ohm feels like an endless tunnel. An absorbing and ultimately destructive sketch.

Ohm is relevant in the times we are currently living in. The dichotomy between following and opposition, resistance and loss, control and letting go is challenging us again. Reason for Van den Broek to revisit and reflect on the original production. Maybe after this revival the need to reinterpret identity and authenticity will resurface. Or has the balance shifted?

Ohm is a production created in 2010 by Ann Van den Broek in collaboration with COVER #2 which also commissioned it. The work is based on the production Mijn solo voor Marie (Vernietigd) created by the unconventional Belgian choreographer Marc Vanrunxt in 1997. Van Den Broek delved into the material and found her own expressive form. Niek Kortekaas designed a new set inspired by the original set design. Arne Van Dongen composed new music for Ohm, and Bernie van Velzen created the lighting design.
