Ezra Veldhuis en Bosse Provoost onderzoeken vrijheid en onvrijheid in relatie tot technologie, door Richard Brautigans gedicht All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace uit 1967 te bewerken voor theater.
Machines, medicijnen, algoritmes: veel nieuwe technologie lijkt gericht op sociale controle of op het vergroten van de werkdiscipline, in plaats van dat ze ons nieuwe vrijheden bieden. Betekent dat dat de droom van Brautigan uiteen is gespat? Leven we allang in een complete verdraaide uitwerking van zijn droombeeld? Of heeft is de vrijheid die in zijn droom wordt beloofd nog steeds mogelijk?
De voorstelling golft heen en weer tussen utopie en scepsis, tussen extase en ontgoocheling: we zien een "cybernetische ecologie" waarin het niet altijd duidelijk is of de manier waarop mensen verstrikt zijn geraakt met hun apparaten symbiotisch is of juist voor verdeeldheid zorgt. Het licht lijkt te willen misleiden en hypnotiseren, de muziek vraagt ons te vertrouwen en los te laten. De vraag is niet of we verstrikt zijn geraakt, maar hoe we lijden, dansen en wankelen binnen die verstriktheid.
