What does it mean to be trans in the Netherlands? A seemingly simple question, but is there really one clear answer?
With readers Savannah, Tanja Florence Uneken and Lila Smittenberg, Vlinder Verouden’s documentary theatre piece WAT HET BETEKENT sets out to find one. Three trans women, each with different life experiences, meet in a garden.
Their encounter leads to an intergenerational conversation about being trans in the Netherlands, learning from our foremothers and breaking away from the United States as the hegemonic frame of reference. Slowly, the women become immersed in a poetic exploration that reveals how the way we talk can give us so much, but can also demand a great deal from us. A performance full of reflection and perspective that connects generations.
What You See Festival is the performance festival about gender and identity. Here you'll find dance, theater, workshops, and exhibitions from artists from both home and abroad.
With the theme If Not Now, When?! we reflect with the audience on the present time. What You See brings together diverse perspectives and makes space for unheard voices and unique art experiences.
