Who are our (new) neighbors? In the neighborhoods of Lombok, Overvecht, and Hoograven in Utrecht, open stages have been held in recent weeks where people from all cultures could tell their stories. The most beautiful, moving, and striking stories will be featured in the afternoon program of the Vertel! festival.

Under the guidance of musicians Helga Huisjes and Nico van Asdonck, the stories will be brought to even greater heights. Afterward, there will be food and music, and of course, the chance to share even more stories together.

The open stages were organized by Verhalenhuis Utrecht at De Voorkamer (Lombok), Ubuntuhuis (Lombok), Villa Vrede (Hoograven), AZC/ Plan Einstein (Overvecht). Ten participants will be selected from these open stages for the follow-up trajectory. The Vertelacademie Utrecht will provide these storytellers with training to prepare them for the stage.

Storytellers - Imad Alsulaiman, Mohammed Senussi, Laura Perez, Vinith Bhandari (group 1:30-3:00) Roxana Gavrilut, Nanda Mohamed,  Ekram Jalboutt, Samia El Boustati (group 3:30-5:00) Musicians - Helga Huisjes en Nico van Asdonck Directors - Marliz van Til en Raymond den Boestert Host - Yetunde Olúdáre

Intermission program in the foyer

During Vertel!, you can listen to music and stories, enjoy a snack and a drink, and visit the storytelling exhibition by hoiUtrecht and the storytelling installation Gras is Groen during the intermissions. Free admission between 1:30 PM and 10:30 PM.

During the program intermissions, there will be music performances by Catching Cultures Orchestra: an orchestra based in Utrecht where newcomers, Dutch-born citizens, and everything in between make music together.

At 8:45 PM, there will be a special performance by Abdulaal Hussein, an actor and theater maker from Utrecht. After participating in Adelheid Roosen's neighborhood safari theater project, Abdulaal realized that theater is his home. He will tell a short story about the theme of "neighbors".

In the foyer, the theatrical installation Gras is Groen by young visual theater maker Marjolein Verschuuren is on display. A storytelling installation about the grass at the neighbors.

You can also view the hoiUtrecht storytelling exhibition on the theme of neighbors.
