BECOMING Decolonized

BECOMING: Queering your friday night with fluid theater, dialogue, art and party.

Welcome to BECOMING decolonized: the second edition of the series in Utrecht! The influence of the colonial past is still felt in our lives. Its effects are very different for each person and position. Hosts Ro Rox Roxy Roxanna Verwey and Sharmila Gabbana will therefore approach decolonization from an intersectional perspective. How can we, individually and in relation to each other, free ourselves from oppression and how can transformation and social justice become a daily act? Through music, spoken word and collective dance ritual, we aim to heal ourselves and honour the ancestors. Together, we build a queer space of intimacy within which we can bridge our differences.

The complete line-up is here:
Versatile artist Djuwa Mroivili performs a scene from their show “May Our Love Continue To Grow’’ on the relationship between colonization and the stigmatization of queerness.
Argentinian drag duo Nazapig & Plattona bring theatre about decolonial gender roles.
Maria 007, a Colombian trans woman from the ballroom scene, will be performing a sensual iteration of the Mapalé dance.
During a performance, Joelina "JoJo" shows us how Ballroom is a space for decolonization.
Syrian poet and researcher Naya Aljoudi presents a poetry piece about decolonisation.
Musician and activist Famke Rauch performs songs about the urgent need for decolonising the world.
Creator, multi-instrumentalist, theatre maker and ceremonial facilitator Dizzi Geetha will perform a musical ritual with us.
DJ C4MPUS4R1 will end the night with a mix of traditional Indonesian music and club/dance hits at our after party.

Good to know
BECOMING is always a mix of English (80%) and Dutch (20%), and also non-linquistic elements and vibes. The event will be presented in simple English. Some of our performances might be in Dutch. If you don’t speak Dutch please join anyway, you will still be able to follow enough of it!
