A Bout de Sueurs

This performance is spoken in French and English.

A Bout du Sueurs is a tragedy about the mirage of migration and exile. It tells of the descent to hell by a family that perishes from adultery, marital violence and alienation.

The writing of the piece by playwright Hakim Bah was prompted by the news of two young passengers found frozen to death in the landing gear of a Conakry-Brussels flight. The main character is Binta somewhere in the South. She meets a childhood friend who introduces her to dating websites. Binta leaves her abusive husband Bachir and leaves for France to meet a date. Bachir follows her to Paris and abandons their children. They decide to travel to their mother in Paris, which leads to their death in the landing gear of an airplane. Bachir cannot bear the loss of his wife and children and puts an end to his life.

The characters in A Bout du Sueur are lonely figures who meet and avoid each other, hoping for a better life. The setting is the departure hall of an airport, with a musician who guards the 'passage' from one world to another. But the characters never cross the line between those two worlds. Their human condition is to remain trapped and unreachable in a world they cannot leave.

About Afrovibes

On 13 and 14 October the 19th edition of Afrovibes Festival will land in Theater Kikker in Utrecht. Artistic director Jay Pather (South Africa) and programmer Marjorie Boston (Netherlands) have again created a program that shows the diversity and power of change in the African continent. This year with dance, theater and music in Utrecht by contemporary choreographers and theater makers from Guinea/France, South Africa, Ivory Coast/France, Kenya and the Netherlands. And of course music with DJs and discussions with the makers.

The theme of the 19th edition of Afrovibes is RUPTURE | RAPTURE. The division and disruption that can arise between people and cultures. But also the intense pleasure and delight we get from our contact with others. It is the tension between encounter and disruption that Afrovibes is putting to the fore this year. This year's program has a special focus on theatre makers and artists from West Africa and the African diaspora in Europe. The program of Afrovibes takes place at Theater Kikker and Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.
